Welcome to Rockument's first CD-ROM title, "Haight-Ashbury in the Sixties!" The following is important information for Macintosh users.
The title is a 2-disc set. Both discs work on Macintosh and Windows systems. Disc 1 is called HAIGHT and Disc 2 is called ASHBURY.
Start with Disc 1, HAIGHT, if you want to run the TURN ON rockumentary. Start with Disc 2, ASHBURY, if you want to play the DROP OUT game. Start with either disc to see the contents of that disc (in the TUNE IN section).
The CD-ROM title offers more than one way to start the title. Double-click "Haight-Ashbury in the Sixties" (the yin/yang icon) to start the title from the main menu. The "Turn On", "Tune In", and "Drop Out" icons are available as short-cuts - double-click them to go directly to the menus for those parts of the CD-ROM title.
Requirements
To run on a Macintosh, you need a model that offers a 25-MHz 68030 or faster processor (68040 or PowerPC recommended), System 7.0 or higher, at least 8 megabytes RAM, Sound Manager 3.0 (included), QuickTime 2.0 (included), a 13-inch or larger color display set to 256 colors at 640 by 480 pixel resolution, and a double-speed CD-ROM drive. Amplified stereo speakers are recommended.
Starting Up
"Haight-Ashbury in the Sixties" is a 2-disc set: both discs work for Macintosh and Windows platforms. Disc 1 is called HAIGHT and Disc 2 is called ASHBURY.
Insert Disc 1 (HAIGHT) in your CD-ROM drive. Its logo should appear. Double-click the logo, and the disc's folder opens to reveal the "Haight-Ashbury in the Sixties" icon. Double-click this icon to start the title.
Start with Disc 1, HAIGHT, if you want to run the rockumentary, which is called TURN ON. Start with Disc 2, ASHBURY, if you want to play the game, which is called DROP OUT. Start with either disc to see the contents of that disc (in the TUNE IN section). The "Haight-Ashbury in the Sixties" icon is used to start the title from either disc. Or, use the shortcut icons TURN ON, TUNE IN and DROP OUT.
For those with more memory and therefore the capability to gain faster performance with digital video: you can change the memory setting of the startup "Haight-Ashbury in the Sixties" file and/or the shortcut files to use more memory. See "Changing the Memory Settings" later in this document.
Rockument recommends that you do not use any "RAM doubling" utility or software to simulate real RAM. The minimum amount of RAM required must be real hardware RAM in your system.
Please turn off virtual memory if you have left it on. Virtual memory is an option in the Memory control panel that makes space on your hard disk act like additional ╨ but slow ╨ RAM. While the CD-ROM is compatible with virtual memory on both standard Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers, we recommend turning it off to run this CD-ROM title. This is because the slow speed of virtual memory compared to real RAM ╨ and its lack of knowledge about what data a program is likely to need next ╨ usually makes it a poor choice for multimedia applications. More memory does not necessarily mean better performance unless the memory is real RAM. In fact, virtual memory can easily cause awkward pauses and sound or video dropouts if the system chooses an inopportune moment in a movie to swap data between RAM and disk. For these reasons, Rockument recommends that you not use virtual memory when running this CD-ROM on the Macintosh.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. The sound isn't playing.
A. You may want to check the volume using the Sound control panel. The title requires QuickTime version 2.0 and Sound Manager 3.0. Be sure that you already have the Sound Manager 3.0 installed in the Extensions folder of your System folder. If you don't have it, a copy is provided on the HAIGHT disc in the System Additions folder. Drag the Sound Manager and Sound icons to your System folder (be sure to close the System folder first if it is open). Then restart the computer.

Q. The movies play with hiccups in the sound or video.
A. The title requires QuickTime version 2.0 or newer. Be sure that you already have the QuickTime extension installed in the Extensions folder of your System folder. If you don't have it, a copy is provided on the HAIGHT disc in the System Additions folder. Drag the icons to your System folder (be sure to close the System folder first if it is open). Then restart the computer.

Q. The sound volume is too low.
A. The title uses a special format for digital sound that provides 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo (CD quality) sound in a compressed space. (It is not "red book audio" which can be found on regular audio CDs and some CD-ROM titles, which limits the animation that can be viewed during playback.) This format plays at a lower volume on Macintosh speakers. Rockument recommends that you connect your Macintosh to amplified speakers or to a stereo system with an amplifier. You should also set the volume in the Sound control panel to the highest setting before running the title.

Q. The title won't run properly.
A. Make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirement, with at least 8MB of RAM. A minimum of 3500K is necessary as the largest memory block free to run the title (use the Apple menu to bring up the About This Macintosh dialog box, which displays the memory blocks).

Q. The title does not display properly.
A. Make sure you have set your display to run in 640 x 480 mode with 256 colors.

Q. What happens if I win the DROP OUT game?
A. A picture of your card appears (the one you picked at the beginning of the game), and the enlightenment sequence begins. We won't describe this sequence, which is somewhat different for each win depending on the card chosen and the points for each attribute. When this sequence ends, the title automatically quits to the System.
Known Problems
One problem Rockument has encountered and is unable to fix is a problem with the use of this title on Quadra 840AV models (which are discontinued). Occasionally when using the time line, credits, or help windows in the TURN ON section, the title will "crash" and you are returned to the System (as if you had quit). It causes no harm to your system, your hard disk, or this title, but you must start again.
The Quadra 840AV models have been discontinued by Apple Computer. If you are a Quadra 840AV owner, if you write to us at the address below, we will provide a fix for this problem when we discover how to fix it. One suggestion is to turn off all your System extensions except QuickTime, Sound Manager, and the CD-ROM related extensions, and then run the title.
Changing the Memory Settings
The CD-ROM title offers several "projector" files to start the title. The main "projector" file for starting the title is called "Haight-Ashbury in the Sixties" and has the yin/yang icon. Double-click this "projector" to start the title. The other "projectors" ("Turn On", "Tune In", and "Drop Out") are available as short-cuts - double-click them to go directly to the menus for those parts of the CD-ROM title.
You can modify the memory settings for these "projector" files to improve performance on your Macintosh system. Projectors have a default minimum memory partition of 3500K and a preferred size of 8144K (for systems with more than 8 megabytes of RAM). If you need to change the memory partition for a projector file to increase performance, copy the projector file to your hard disk, and open it with the Get Info command in the File menu. You can then unlock the projector file, and change the minimum and preferred memory settings (following instructions provided with your Macintosh system). Please note, however, that projectors without enough memory allocated may not run properly.
